What appeals to me about electronics

Electronics is ubiquitous in modern society, from mobile phones to laptops, to smart devices connected to the Internet of Things. The advancements made in technology have led to ground-breaking innovations that have changed millions of people’s lives and have helped us to make the world more accessible to others. Electronics provides me with the challenge of problem-solving to find solutions to real-life problems and allows me to make a positive impact on society by working with others.

Why I chose Jaltek

The main reason why I accepted a scholarship with Jaltek is because I wanted to work for a smaller company on a variety of projects. This is because I wanted to learn as much as possible with regards to becoming an excellent electronics engineer, and I felt that with Jaltek’s focus on learning and development, I would gain a holistic insight into the life of an electronics engineer.

At Jaltek, as an electronics manufacture contract company, I’ve been involved in the design and development of several circuits for many different applications. I have been working mainly remotely during my placement, and I’ve found it very easy to communicate with the other engineers regularly over Microsoft Teams. Despite working remotely, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how all the engineers I’ve worked with have treated me as part of the team and how much I have learnt working at Jaltek.

"I HAVE DEVELOPED A STRONG CAMARADERIE WITHIN MY TEAM AND HAVE FELT VERY COMFORTABLE IN WORKING ACTIVELY WITH OTHERS, ASKING QUESTIONS AS WELL AS PRESENTING MY VIEWS IN TACKLING PROJECTS."

My placement and its value

With Jaltek, I’ve been able to work on many cool projects and in the process, I’ve gained a deep understanding of the design process used from product ideation to manufacture. I’ve also had the opportunity to learn Altium and have been using this tool for schematic capture of circuit designs. I have also been involved with developing firmware using C to control an ultrasonic sensor to relay readings back to a microprocessor as part of a utility unit that was contracted to Jaltek.

With this opportunity, I have been able to learn in detail the stages that a product goes through from specification to manufacture and have gained a deeper appreciation for the stages of development and planning that goes behind launching a product to manufacture. This has been very interesting because this has given me the commercial awareness needed to fast-track into the electronics industry.

My Interests

In my free time, I practise Shotokan Karate and I am a member of the Shotokan Karate Society at my university. I have an avid interest in photography and love to take photos of nature when I get the chance. I also love to read and play the piano in my spare time and enjoy writing creative fiction.
